Poshmark vs Vinted vs Depop

For an updated review of all the apps CLICK HERE

Do you ever had that one piece that you thought you would wear ALL time time but after couple years your realize you never even reached for it? Do you have a piece that you wore once but just doesn't fit your style or your body? Yes we've all been there. I have listed pros and cons of three apps that I have discovered that you can sell directly from your closet. You are your own businesswoman!

All three of these are apps that allows you to sell & buy pre-loved or brand new items. It'll help you earn a little money on the side and clear your closet out for MORE STUFF! I've been kind of obsessed with selling and buying which in the end I just break even pretty much. I don't mind because I was selling clothes I've never worn (with tags) or I've worn once/very lightly and bringing in new pieces that I knew I can wear longer term. So here's my review of each app if you are interested in starting! I am only listing things that I have experienced.

If I haven't covered everything, I apologize!

Poshmark ~2 month
  • Free shipping on items over $500
  • If an item is above a certain price - Poshmark actually check the authenticity before it is shipped to the seller so that is less likely that you will get scammed!
  • More selections - probably because it's been around for awhile
    • Designers, a lot of clothes for young adults
  • Security! Doesn't give the seller their money until you receive your item and is satisfied with it
    • if not theres investigation that Poshmark goes through and etc. so
  • Your "feed" is people/brands you follow
  • You can repeatedly share your listing if you think it's not getting enough attention and your followers will see it on their 'feed'
    • you can also share other people's listings you find interesting with your followers!
  • POSH PARTIES! This helps you advertise your listings
    • Basically a posh party is a themed party where people are allowed to share their listings. There are rules and guidelines to participating.
  • You can access it through your computer as well, but the only thing you can't do is edit on there
    • oh also you can't view their profile/ratings via the compute
  • They provide you with the shipping label. You can just leave it in your mailbox for the mail man to pick up!
  • App is better on Apple products than Android (I have android phone and Ipad)
  • You can sell ANYTHING but mostly it's clothing
  • Allows commercial photos
    • however, someone people tend to use ONLY commercial photos which then I definitely recommend you to ask for original pictures.
  • You can track your order through the app
Cons
  • 4.99 flat rate shipping price - although that is good for some items, things like a hair pin is definitely not worth it
    • Little bit of positive however - if the seller reduces the price by even 10% there is a window period where the shipping goes down and everyone who has 'liked' the listing will be notified!
  • 20% posh tax - they take 20% of what you make
  • You are blood bound to your offer
    • you are allowed to make offers and the seller may accept, decline, or make a counter offer. However, once the seller accepts, there's no turning back. Your transaction is done.
  • No private messaging. To discuss EVERYTHING is through the comment area of the listing.
  • Payout takes FOREVER (~week or so)
    • The 3-4 day wait for payout from vinted seems like sparkles and glitter compared to the poshmark payout

Vinted  ~3 months
ignore the "red" part LOL
http://www.vinted.com/

Pros
  • If you are invited by a friend and use their link/code you will get $5 voucher to spend on your first purchase!
    • There are some limitations:
      • $5 doesn't cover the shipping cost
      • Even if your item is $4 you don't have the extra $1 to spend elsewhere
    • Click here for my code & on your way to your $5 voucher!
  • They give you more shipping options than Poshmark depending on the size
    • small: $3.59
    • medium: $5.99
    • large: $6.99
  • Security! Doesn't give the seller their money until you receive your item and is satisfied with it
    • if not theres investigation that Vinted goes through and etc.
  • You can access this through the computer and edit through the computer!
    • but you cannot view reviews of the seller
  • You are allowed to make offers to the seller, but the good thing about vinted is that an offer isn't binding. When the seller accepts your offer, you still have a choice to purchase it or not.
  • They provide you with the shipping label. You can just leave it in your mailbox for the mail man to pick up!
  • Allowed private messaging
  • App is better on Apple products than Android (I have android phone and Ipad)
  • When listing your items - vinted is more detailed with information you are required to provide
    • Conditions
    • When you bought
    • did you buy it full priced or on sale
  • You can track your order though the app
Cons
  • 19% vinted tax - they take off 19% of what you earn.
  • A lot of 'junior' selected items
    • I'm pretty sure this is because it's a relatively new app I believe and theres a lot of younger sellers but don't let the age stop you - there are a lot of good sellers on vinted!
  • They allow you to personalize your feed with brands you like and your sizes but I feel like I never actually go through it because I'm always uninterested by what's on there.
    • basically I feel like it's not really that personalized, personally :p
  • Doesn't allow you to bump your listings until a certain point and when that point comes you HAVE to lower our price or something like that.
  • Only allows listings of "stuff you can wear"
  • You are not allowed to post "commercial" photos.
  • You get an annoying notifications (the red in the picture) - when one of your listing isn't doing so hot
    • of course this is also helpful but it requires you to upload ANOTHER picture before the red warning goes away which for me personally it's annoying.
  • When you 'follow' someone's closet, it notifies you they uploaded a another listening which is a good thing for some people but REALLY annoying to me.
  • Takes 3-4 days for them to allow you to withdraw the funds into your  bank account and then ANOTHER 3-4 days for it to appear on your bank statement.
    • this is mostly likely basic protocol but the wait is just so long LOL - maybe i'm too impatient? xD
Depop  ~1 month
http://www.depop.com/en/

I"m still a noob! I've actually only started using this and I'm not really 100% how to use it BUT this is my experience so far.

Pros:
  • Aesthetically pleasing - the format is just like Instagram. Majority of the sellers has really nice photographs of the items they are selling (JUST like Instagram photos).
  • You decide your own shipping price
  • Allowed to ship world wide so your window shopping range is endless!
  • Gives you the option of meeting up with the seller but of course becareful and always bring a friend.
  • Payment is through paypal (product goods section) which is very secured
  • Allowed private messaging
  • You can sell ANYTHING

Cons:
  • Still has fees but I think it's a lot less than poshmark or vinted. Payment is through paypal and paypal does take off a fee for selling 'product goods'
  • Only accessible through the mobile app
  • Doesn't allow you track your order through the app. You must go to the USPS website.

Helpful Tips:
  1. If you do decide to use all three apps for more access to people who might want to purchase, make sure you update on ALL the apps if you list the same things
    • ex: If you sell something on vinted, make sure you say that it has been sold on all the other apps - so no one purchases it when you don't have the product.
  2. Take good pictures if you're trying to sell
    1. it'll attract more people to just look at your listing even and your closet will get more exposure
  3. Join Posh parities! [for poshmark only]
  4. Always ask for more pictures and ask a lot of questions (but have a SERIOUS interest in purchasing)
    • Although a lot of sellers get annoyed by this especially if you don't purchase and that is obvious, but as a buyer you have the right to know everything before you purchase an item. And of course if the seller lied or something, it's easier to resolve disputes because you have all the evidence there in the comment section.
  5. Search search search!
    • There's always that one listing that will give you the best price!
  6. Don't be afraid to negotiate! The worst case scenario is that they say no.
  7. Be friendly!
WARNING: Using these apps may cause a SHOPPING ADDICTION. Most products are so discounted that, you just can't pass it up - even brand new items! So beware. Make sure you have self control before you start!

**disclaimer: I am not sponsored for this review. I don't know 100% logistics of each app so try it out for yourself or read the FAQs on each app/website!**

    1. Hello! I thought this was really helpful. One thing I have notice is the difference between how Poshmark and Vinted handle photos. Vinted, to me, is way easier as you can upload more than one at a time. On Poshmark, you have to select the file folder for photos for each photo, and it only uploads SQUARE photos which is a major pain if you started out taking photos for Vinted as lots of your images will get cropped.

    4. Pro tip : on vinted you do not need to take a new photo to fix the low attention flag just hit edit then edit photos then move them around so it is a new order. This is also how you bump an item. It goes right to the top of your page. I do this weekly, go through and bump items that need more views. I just rearrange the pix and change my title then tada!! Bumped. Hope this helps xoxo Hillary Marek
